Picture a wedding by the beach in Malibu. The sun shines brightly over whispy clouds and a blue sky. You can hear the sounds of waves crashing on the nearby shore. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? If you’re looking for the perfect venue for a beach wedding where you won't have to get sand in your shoes, we highly suggest an Adamson House wedding. It’s one of the most beautiful beach-side locations in Southern California!

The Adamson House sits on 13 acres of beach-front land nestled in between the Malibu Pier and Malibu Lagoon. It was built in 1929 and was occupied by the Adamson family until 1962 when Rhoda Rindge Adamson passed away. The state of California then purchased the grounds and had plans to demolish the house and turn the land into a parking lot for beach goers. Thankfully, the Malibu Historical Society, the LA County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Adamson family fought to preserve the house. They eventually won and in 1983, the Adamson house grounds was opened to the public.

The Mediterranean revival-style house makes extensive use of local Malibu ceramic tiles, which gives it a very unique and luxurious feel. Everything in this house is hand-crafted, from the teakwood doors, to the hand-painted murals, to the ironwork. In 1977, The Adamson House was added to the National Register of Historic Places and in 1985 it was designated as a California Historical Landmark.

We’ve put together a “walking tour” of the main areas of the grounds so you can get a feel for what this venue has to offer and possibly decide if an Adamson House wedding is right for you! When you first enter the Adamson house grounds, you’ll see a large lawn area to your left. This area isn’t typically used during a wedding, but we use it a lot for bride and groom pictures, bridal party pictures, and family pictures. It’s a really romantic location to photograph at sunset!

As you walk down the lawn’s path, you’ll come to the Adamson House. The front courtyard features a really mosaic cool stone and grass ground cover. This courtyard is where the cocktail hour is usually held and we think it’s a really great spot for that purpose.

Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to go inside the house during a wedding for pictures. But here’s a little tip - if you pay extra for a docent led tour of the house for your guests during cocktail hour, they’ll let you go up to the balcony that overlooks the back lawn area for bride and groom pictures. It’s a great way of getting some unique Adamson House wedding pics.

Back to the tour - If you’re standing in front of the courtyard and you turn right, you’ll see a path that takes you down to the lower lawn. This is where the wedding ceremonies take place. It’s quite romantic because the bride and groom stand under a beautiful tall oak tree as they exchange their vows.

Heading back up to the house level, if you continue along the path on the right side of the house, you’ll come to the back of the house and the large back lawn area. This is where the wedding receptions are typically held and it’s an awesome location because it has the best views of the beach. You and your guests can listen to the waves crashing on the beach as everyone enjoys their dinner!

As you walk even further east past the back lawn you’ll come to the pool and pool house area . The pool house is where the bride usually gets ready and puts her dress on. You can also opt to do all of your getting ready at a nearby hotel.
